Default History of 1st Division Italy 1943, 1st Infantry Brigade

Our oral family history is getting a bit fuzzy. My uncle Major Edward G Devlin was an attaché to Major-General Guy Simonds? And it was his duty to write the regimental or history of that campaign. How would I begin to look for that document?

He was not a professional historian.

One incident that he shared with us is that he was detailed to escort a group of about 20 Polish prisoners to a papal audience at the Vatican, where they informed that their entire town was destroyed.

I will search further for you, but I might suggest the first point of contact for the document would be Library and Archives Canada (LAC).

Another suggestion is to look into the War Diaries microfilmed files of both the 1st Cdn Div and the 1st Cdn Brigade. Many times these files contain information prepared at the various HQ's and then filed as part of the War Diaries. These files "may" be available at Heritage Canadiana. I will check further to see if I can find any files that may help in your search.

Info from LAC

For an easy-to-read overview of the unit’s activities, we recommend starting with Published Histories. These books are often called “regimental histories.” They cover the history and activities of the unit. The level of detail varies for each history. Some books include a variety of information such as pictures, maps, lists of unit members, and quotes from unit members.

The Advantages of Published Histories:

- easier to read than War Diaries
- contain a variety of information
- can usually be sent to your local library via interlibrary loan*

You can search for these on our Library Search database by using the unit’s name.
