Holy crapola.... That is going to take a little while to sort out how to use that information!!! Great stuff Temujin you are really giving me hope with your help!!

From one your earlier posts here (https://www.royalcdnmedicalsvc.ca/vi.../world-war-ii/) I downloaded the PDF of Official History of the Canadian Medical Services 1939 -1945.....And there are 2 references to the hospital being located in Aldershot, and then there is also this

No. 1 Convalescent Depot remained at Brixham, Devonshire, until the end of April 1943, when
it was transferred to Hindhead, Surrey. Shortly thereafter it departed for the Mediterranean theatre and was
replaced by No. 2. This unit left Hindhead in April 1944 for Hunmanby, Yorkshire. There No. 4 took over on
9 June 1944, moving to Farnborough, Hampshire on 2 August. No. 3 did not operate as a convalescent depot
in England; soon after its mobilization in May 1944 it was sent to France.

Interesting!!

Unfortunately all the info I gave you are files "HELD" by LAC. They have not been digitized (to my knowledge). The only way to see this information is to physically visit LAC in Ottawa.

Of course, this may be impossible for you, so the only other option is to hire a private researcher to look for you. LAC has a list of researchers on their website...........but, as you can see I gave you LOTS of files, but you. May wish to concentrate only on the files in the period that she was with them and just before (or during) when she left.

These are huge files (large boxes of info)......and the only way to find info is to read each page......a huge task.

Another option, is to contact Heritage Canadiana, which is a company that is digitizing LAC records. You could request if they would digitize certain files for you. Their link is:

http://heritage.canadiana.ca

So, even though I posted lots of sources, it may be a BIG task to actually review this information

Cheers

Thanks Termujin. It definitely is a big task indeed!

I think I might have to contact Heritage Canadiana and see how I go with that, hopefully that can be arranged!

It would certainly be difficult for me to get there personally, however it might be an excuse for a vacation haha!

I have also received a response from the University of Calgary, and they are forwarding my request to The Military Museums Library and Archives, where the William Harry Carson fonds are held. Hopefully that will provide some decent results too!

Until then there is still lots of work to do. Many thanks to you =)

Hey just a quick update.

After searching I've concluded that No. 4 Canadian General Hospital was at "Aldershot General Hospital" in Farnborough from 2 August 1944, for approximately a year...

The hospital has moved a couple of times, but has always been in Farnborough.

Address
Wellington Avenue Aldershot GU12 9BJ

Previous location

Yes

Closure year
c1975

Default I was wrong

fIt's been some time, but just in case anyone else is looking....

After Temujin posted a link to the University of Calgary, in regards to the William Carson Fonds they have listed on their website, I was able to obtain some photos. The kindness and time taken to get the photos scanned and sent was really appreciated.

The fonds contained a number of photos of "Number 4 Canadian General hospital". Dates stamped on some of the photos were Aug 11 1944 - which going by records shows 'No 4' was stationed in Aldershot/Farnborough. (see my previous post above, 'No 4' arrived in the area on the 2nd of August 1944.)

Several photos were taken outside of the same building. After researching I have come to only one conclusion based on these photos. No 4 was not stationed at Aldershot Hospital, however they were at Connaught Hospital, which no longer exists.

I have found information from an email online, which states

Quote:
The Connaught Hospital was a military hospital, situated adjacent to the Duke of Connaught's Road in the North Camp. The whole of the North Camp was actually within the boundary of Farnborough, but any soldier resident there would have said he was stationed in Aldershot
This makes sense, as there is a bit of a mixed bag of reference to Aldershot and Farnborough throughout my grandmothers documents.

I will attempt to post some photos if I can, however quite a few are available just by googling as seen HERE

Until I can post a photo or two from the Fonds Collection, please take my word that I have definitely identified that the photos from the collection or without question, 100% taken in front of the Connaught Hospital. Now, given the timeline, I would have to conclude until proven otherwise, that this is where 'No 4' was stationed, and not at Aldershot General as previously indicated.

Cheers, and thanks again Temujin, your help has been very appreciated. I've had to take a bit of time away from my research, however I'm still chipping away.

Regards
Chris
