World War II ended on VE Day in May 1945 for those Canadians fighting in Europe. Mixed with the joy & celebration of this sudden, new peace were daunting realities: getting the hundreds of thousands of war-weary troops and POWs home, and finding jobs for these returning men and women as their country made the transition from war to peace.

In Part II of VICTORY 1945, entitled Homecoming, a dozen Canadian veterans relate their personal stories of returning to peacetime and civilian life in Canada. There was no going back to the way things were before the war, and wave after wave of changes were about to transform the Dominion. As loved ones returned from overseas, however, there was a simple joy to savour – homecoming.

Canada was about to undergo its greatest transformation since confederation. The country’s successful war-based manufacturing machine had to be converted to a tool of peace, and it had to happen quickly to fulfill the ambitions of the homecoming troops. Once again, personal stories reflect the greater transformation of the country as Canada defined its place in the modern world.
